Daily Diversion: Trash Day — a Craigslist personal ad come to life

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

“Trash Day,” a hilarious video by Sam Lerma at KSAT, was featured on Vimeo this week. It’s the story of a woman’s obsession with her garbage man, based on an actual Craigslist ad, which says: “You are the hottest garbage man I have ever seen.”

It only gets better from there …

Daily Diversion: Chicago lightning storms

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Flying into Chicago two weeks ago, I encountered a crazy thunder storm that stranded my plane on the tarmac of O’Hare International Airport. Turns out, more storms pounded the city the week after I left, and the light show was captured by amazing videos and photographs.

This is a cool time lapse video of lightning hitting the three tallest buildings in Chicago. A photographer for the Chicago Tribune captured the moment of lightning striking two buildings, which sparked an online debate about whether the photo was doctored. Kelly McBride at Poynter discussed how the photo was verified by crowdsourcing.

Long story short: Lightning is cool, kids.

There’s a lesson for journalists somewhere in this video …

Flight stranded during Chicago storm

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I had a blast at my cousin’s wedding last weekend but getting to Chicago was an adventure. A massive storm hit O’Hare International Airport right before we landed. If we had tried landing a few minutes later we would have been diverted to Indianapolis. We ended up sitting in the plane on the tarmac because lightning strikes endangered ground crews. Crazy times.

I wish I could ask questions like Scoops Callahan, AKA 1920s reporter guy, AKA Tom Gribble of the BaD radio show in Dallas. He’s the bees knees who knows his onions.

Daily Diversion: Vespa Rally in San Antonio

Friday, May 28th, 2010
I was working at the office this morning when I heard some weird Roadrunner-style “beep beeps” outside. I went to my editor’s window, which has a clear view of the street facing the Alamo, and I saw a huge group of people on scooters.

It was a Vespa rally. And where there are Vespas, you’ll probably find my friends Thovas and Tina Brown. I went outside and sure enough, I got to see Thovas and Tina at the front of the pack. Here they are in the front row:

Here’s a video of the massive scooter gang heading out:

Update: Express-News photographer Bob Owen shot some cool photos of the rally, which was part of the AmeriVespa Conference in San Antonio.

Police obtained a search warrant to seize property at the home of Gizmodo’s Jason Chen, who had obtained an iPhone prototype. The search is a test of California’s shield law for journalists. And it gave Jon Stewart a chance to tell us how he really feels about Apple. And Steve Jobs. And AT&T. And Paul McCartney …
